AFAIK, file format did not change [noticeably] between Office 97 and
Office 2003 - I know that you can open documents created by O2003 with
O2000 (and suspect that Office 97 will be able too). So you will be able
to share documents with O2003 users just fine.

Update from me that the problem in opening big XLS files using Calc is
already solved.
Previously, the computer had 256MB and I tried to add 512MB memory and it
works !.
The time needed to open 9MB files is less than 1 minute (before: needs more
than 15 min).
