Thanks to google I finally figured out why I couldn't see my images
unless I went to preview. I found an old thread and clicked on my
graphics / images' box and voila. Your directions were crystal clear! I
only wish I'd found them an hour before :)

Sorry, should have been more specific. When you are in the Fields dialog,
Cross-references tab, there is a section at bottom and to avoid the final dot,
you can use the Insert reference to: Chapter or use the Reference entry (to
avoid the numbering).
