The Thesaurus seems to work OK for me, but I tried it on a ".odt" file.
I have noticed that "Word Count" doesn't seem to work on a .doc file
either.
Try saving the file as .odt, then close it and reopen it, and see if the
Thesaurus works. I suspect some of these tools key off internal data

I to get the same problem. If you open the thesaurus without selecting a
word it will open fine. Select a word and it will crash.

I'm using OpenOffice release 1.1.4 primarily for the word processing
function - I find it an excellent solution, yet the thesaurus feature
appears to be greyed out on my Tools list. I have the language and
dictionary settings set to English UK.
