I just updated to iOS 9.0.2 on my iPhone 6, and so far, the keyboard echo seems to be working okay. I will have to play with it more in the morning. Just out of curiosity, does this problem occur within a specific app or when the rotor is set to a particular setting, such as character or word?

Ah, OK, for future reference, you're probably using IMAP, which is now the default for GMail. I'm not sure it figures into your problem, but the read/unread status is kept in the cloud when you're using IMAP, so if you read a message on one device, it'll show up as read on all of your devices.
