you can set it to delete upon quitting mail or after a specified time. go
the preferences choose account in the table and you find all settings in the
mailbox behaviours tab

My friend went to the gmail site on the web and deleted them from there by
hand, but she's sighted. With the amount of mail I have, tha'd take tons of
time since it only displays 50 messages per page! I don't have that much
patience!

If you go in to the advanced options on your iPhone, or iPad, there is an
option that says archive, you have the option to turn it on or have it off.

Thunderbird also lets you create folders/labels in the client that
automatically get reflected in Gmail. Alternatively, you could also move
messages between local folders and folders on Gmail or even between
folders on different IMAP accounts.

Hello Mark. Unfortunately the webpage only allows you to select what is on the

Hi. This is how I do it as well. I can go create labels on the Gmail site. Then
the next time I check mail from my phone or from Thunderbird the labels are
seen as folders. So the all-male folder in my account has more than 15,000
messages on it, however many of them are inside folders or

The way I did this is as follows. Move all your important messages to a folder
and then export them. Then delete your all mail messages, then go to trash and
tell them to delete for good. ONce you do this, they will be all gone. I had
to do this about a month ago because I had over 12

I have to chime in here and say that I have messages, like Caitlyn does, back
to about June, 2011. I am struggling with the Gmail page to delete them all
but it seems that you have to check every single check box, there dose not seem
to be a delete all, option. what a drag this is.
Mark
Hmm, well I use Thunderbird, and like I said, I only have meials in my
Trash folder going back just over a month. Of course, I have messages
much older than that in All Mail, but that's because of messages I've
moved into different folders.
To be honest, I almost never go into trash or All Mail.
I do not have the problem of receiving old messages on the Mac; it doesn't show
me repeats. but, when I hit Gmail with my Ipad 3, it shows messages from June,2
011, and will download 50 after 50 after 50 bundles of them, keeping me from
getting to newer stuff. That's why it's annoying; were it
Exactly! I have the same thing! totally annoying! Makes me not even want to

Hmm, the iPad must handle email differently. I do have some old messages
in my In Box that I haven't filed yet, but the iPhone just downloads the
last 50 messages.
I don't see how to do this on my iPhone, but is there a way to
unsubscribe to your All Mail folder? If there is then these messages
Hey, if you have the thunderbird program for mail, or other ones that
handle gmaill, I speak only of thunderbird because that is what I
use--you have all kinds of folders and you can actually write the names
on them in gmail site, then you can fill them up to your hearts
content. I have one
Actually, Cait, I shut Gmail down on my pad, and now only get mail from my
Icloud account, precisely for this reason. when I figure out how to wipe all
the messages from my Gmail account, if I ever develop patience that abundant,
then I'll turn it back on.

Another option may be the Gmail app from Google. I have no idea if
you'll like this, or if it will help or not.

Yes, if you are using imap on a Mac computer, you can create new mailboxes
using new mailbox in Apple mail. Create them in the gmail level instead of
where your inboxes or On my Mac boxes are and they will show up as labels on
the gmail site and additional boxes on your Apple computer and iOS

I just figured Clwyd was good, but I didn't wanna delete it for fear of the
subject not being recognized any more. :) I kinda like the way it sounds now…
Clwyd … nyah.
What happens is that my Ipad 3 will download, 50 at a time, all 10,000 messages
or however many there are, *BEFORE* showing me

well you can actually open the g mail folder tree view on the mac and see 12K
of messages in my case i think it pulls them down from the server
i wish to be honest i could just ditch g mail and find a service that doesn't
store my emails anywhere

You could use POP with Gmail or other email providers and have your
email downloaded to your PC and removed from the server. Once they're
downloaded, you're just working with local messages and local folders.
You could delete and organize them as much as your client will let you.
