Had you ever actually downloaded any of the album to your device? I did, and
today read an article on the Apple site that says if you did, you have to
remove it manually, but that isn't working either. I did

It sounds like a lot of trouble to remove it, I never use safari. They
should have never assumed and put it on the devices but I know, we have
been down that road before.

You can use any browser that you have installed on the device, it does not
have to be safari. I just said Safari because that is the native browser on
the device

Just go to music, artists and u2. Then flick up with 1 finger to get to
delete and double tap.

First go to https://itunes.com/soi-remove https://itunes.com/soi-remove
Next choose remove album.
Next sign in with the apple ID and password that you use to sign in to the
iTunes and app store with.
Next you should see a confirmation message that the album has been removed.
