I am currently running Debian with KDE 2.2.I've just installed VNCServer 3.3.6-4 and
when I connect I get the grey screen error.I had a look at the FAQ's and found that I
need to change the xsartup script to point to kde2.As far as I can see the
installation never created the
Dear Orin,
yes, i have to authenticate myself to the proxy.
Why do you ask? Would there be a difference without authentication?

Hello list,
I searched the archives, but unfortunately did not find information about
this; maybe you have some pointers for me.
Here's the problem: When I connect to a VNC server, sometimes the person
on the other end would like to close the connection at his/her request.
Since I (as the
Hi Christian,
There is a way that will allow the user on the remote PC to kill any

It's a bit of a botch/bodge but it works :D
Create a batch file in your Winvnc/TightVNC/RealVNC program folder (where
the winvnc.exe lives).
Put 2 lines into the batch file:

If you have the latest version (make sure you uninstall previous
versions before installing new ones!) it will ask you if you want
to run it as a service during the installation process.

I have been using vnc for many years and I have been having the problem
of the vncserver dying after a certain timeframe. This happens usually
once a month. We have a solaris box with about 20 - 30 vnc sessions
open at any given time. The message I am getting when it dies is this:

Are people on this list aware that the Win2000/XP Trojan Deloder-A
(nomenclature varies slightly) uses the vnc module explorer.exe?
The first sign of infection if you have Xvnc starting automatically as
a service is that you will get an error message saying that a VNC
server is already running.
I know many people have discussed this error in these lists before, however
all of them pertain to ports and other local settings, none of which have
anything to do with my configuration.
First, this came out of nowhere - I have been using VNC for about 2 years,
and then all of a sudden about a

Ya know, it'd be cool if there was a way to connect to the VNC port on a computer,
issue a command, and get back the flavor and version that is running on that computer.
If anybody feels like adding new features to VNC, this would be awesome!

That is what I was referring to. Yea, it would have to be a new standard implemented
by every flavor. That would actually be the point. It would be nice to query it to
tell if it is running esVNC, realVNC, tightVNC, etc, along with the version number.
Example:

I wouldn't use them :-)
I personally don't see this as any more risk than my browser telling the web
host what I am using, or the server telling me what software it is running.
We already get very rudimentary info from the RFB version.
Right now I audit using a platform specific tool. Having an

never the answer and just hiding the version doesn't take the vulnerability away.

I can easily do this on Windowz platforms by querying the registry or getting
