Mattias,
This behaviour is normally caused by the server computer being configured
with too large an MTU for the network, which is sometimes the case when
running over a VPN. Mouse & keyboard events get to the server OK because
they are small amounts of data, and so much much smaller than the MTU
of a sudden, the one started having this error. The
settings of RealVNC are the same on all three PCs.
Thanks

I see what you are saying but the User does not use FUS. As far as RDP, I
am not sure. All remote users are using variations of Windows XP (Home or
Pro) and this is the only user with the problem suddenly. Another point

Does anyone have any experience with this? And did this fix the problem?
I am going to try this tonight!

Russel,
It's most probably because the desktop environment you're using uses the
SESSION_MANAGER environment variable, so that when you run "vncserver", your
applications are all talking to the session manager for the desktop on which
you ran it, rather than the desktop it created.

James,
You hit the nail on the head. Its working, after reducing my MTU.
Thanks!

The problem is probably that your VPN has an MTU smaller than the underlying
network, but that your servers are not detecting that correctly - this is a
very common flaw in many VPN setups, and will affect any protocol that
transfers non-trivial amounts of data, e.g. FTP, HTTP, etc.

Most likely you are using VPN and MTU is too large. Lower MTU on your
VPN adapter to 1300 which should be safe. If you want more performance
you need to use trial and error to select the best MTU that works. Could
take you a few hours because every time you change MTU you need to reboot.

Sometimes on a few machines here there appears to be no video coming
across. I do connect to the machine and authenticate however the
screen is black and the mouse causes trails on the screen. Has anyone
else come across this problem?
That was the original. basically i think it might come down
The only problem with all of this is that I am not using a VPN. This
is simply on the same LAN. I guess the only differences is the OS as
well as perhaps the version of VNC 3 vs. 4. Although It is not a
constant thing. As in that half of the machines have 3 and half have
4 and half are 2000 sp4
Try looking for support of "VPN Pass thru" on the router. Otherwise I
would look into general vpn issues with your router and the particular
type of vpn client you are using googleing around might get you
started.
If you need some more help i can help with vnc but i dont do much vpn work.

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the reply.
Fast user switching and remote desktop have all been removed from the server
PC - the fact that I can connect to it from one location seems to indicate
that the server pc is set up corrrectly - but all I get from another location
is the black screen.

Shaun,
Have you ever run Remote Desktop or Fast User switching on the XP in the
office that you are trying to connect to? VNC does not cohabit well with
them.
Also what kind of VPN do you have? I use PTPP on my network at work but
there is also a variation called IPSec that I am not familiar wi

Hmm, you seem to have done a good job of isolating the problem already... There is
nothing obviously wrong I can think of, since it works for other desktops.
Analysing this, I'd say that the only 2 things left I can see are:
- that for some reason, packets from that one computer, on the vnc port
I hate to tell you this, but your gifs didn't come across either.

I have a similar problem. I have an XP Pro system at
home running VNC Server. When I connect to it from
work, sometimes it works fine, and sometimes I get the
black screen.
This happens when using the vncviewer on Win95, and
when using it on Linux.
I've often had it working fine one day, and the
