Having posted my own query on this subject I follow the more recent
postings with interest.
In my case I was suffering from 1)unbelievably long copy times in the
finder and 2)applications hanging on opening them.

If by Office 2004 you mean you were using Entourage then no I don't think so
as Entourage keeps them all in a database that pretty much only it can open.

As Ronni has mentioned Spectrum Data are quite good.
I've also used Elcotronics. Found them to be a bit dearer then some of the
others, but have had better results with their service.
They charge about $150 just to look at it then advise what it will cost.

i should know better than not to back up. this time i would lose about 3 years
worth of emails, and the last time i lost about 10 months worth of my life, not
much but still, 10 months is a long time, but not a long time,

1. Can your laptop actually boot at all? (before you assume it is all hard disc
death)
- try booting from the OS disc. Put it in the drive and boot while holding down
the "c" key. If it is only the disc that is dysfunctional it should boot fine,

Have taken it to Next Byte and they couldnt get data off. they have recommended
Spectrum Data, but they are expensive tho.
Will try the one Daniel recommended, they are much nearer to me.
