Hi Steven,
Are you able to ping the IP address of the G3 from your MacBook Pro?
If so, and establishing an AFP connection is proving elusive, perhaps
try ftp. That it,s set up an ftp server on the G3 and see if you can
connect using an ftp client on the MacBook. Versiontracker should be
Ethernet 10Base-T was just the slower earlier implementation. It will talk
happily with Ethernet 10-100 (though, obviously, only at the slower speed).
My IIvx was only 10Base-T but talked happily to the faster machines (just
slowly!)

Thanks to all of those suggestions from everyone.
I've tried all of them, and made some progress, but frustratingly not to the

The furthest I've got is being able to see the G3 when I go to my Network

Not sure what your problem was, Pat. Maybe files created by old software
that wouldn't run on the G4?
Just transferring the data shouldn't be a problem - I made the leap from an
old mac IIvx (68030 processor) direct to a Ti G4 powerbook with no problem
transferring data. It was operating O
I faced this problem 4 years ago when I switched from an old
tangerine iMac to a G4. I was not able to do it. My memory of it is
dim, also, but I recall the main problem was not the cable but
incompatible data formats between the 2 machines.

Hi Steven, Bob
Again from memory Provided ONE of the Macs is newish it should have
autosense and switch to accommodate normal or X-over cables. I'm sure the
Macbook pro should have it - so I think you should be OK connecting from it
with either cable.
