that checks for Xwrapper-4 and otherwise runs XFree86. I'm interested
in what other distributions have done about this.

As far as enhanced gdb for XFree86 modules, our stock system gdb doesn't
support it. David O'Brien has ported patches to gdb52, which is
available at ports/devel/gdb52. I haven't had good luck with it,
though.

your Monitor section. For my 1400x1050 laptop screen I have:

here was just an issue
in DRI (the radeon mergedfb changes) where using the generic int10
emulation caused the driver to crash, while the linux-specific one
didn't. I don't think it got tracked down and a later change fixed it,
but might there be general problems with the generic int10 em
