I had the same problem on my box when i installed, all I had to do is to
enable the telnetd daemon. I also had to enable the ftpd daemon. It seems
that these are not enabled by default.

Subject: post install RH 7.1 connectivity into box problem

Hi,

I apologize for reposting - but I need to try to solve
this as soon as possible. I am not attaching my
messages log to this post - so that moderator approval
trigger does not occur (so hopefully I can get this
answered quicker...please forgive my haste).

======
HI,

This is the second night that I've been pulling my
hair on this. I would appreciate any and all help.

I installed 7.1 on a Dell desktop with 1 nic
card. During the installation process, I was asked if
I wanted the box to act as a firewall - and I chose
the medium option (i.e. open to
ftp,ssh, telnet).

After installation - I was not able to run DHCP - so I
manually configured my machine (i.e.
/etc/sysconfig/network, /etc/resolv.conf, etc...).
I checked my connectivity and I can ssh/ping/telnet
out of the box to my an isp. However, when I try to
telnet into the box - I get "connection
refused". Same with ssh (though I'm not sure whether
I need to install an ssh server).

I thought that maybe this was due to ipchains. So I
went to /etc/init.d and did "./ipchains stop". And
still - I can't do a telnet from the box to itself -
whether on eth0 or lo. In /etc/sysconfig - there is
an ipchains file (the one that was customized during
install to allow telnet, ssh, www, and ftp), and there
is no iptables file.

I've rummaged around /proc trying to figure out if
there are any funky settings - but I couldn't see
anything unusual. I also used the "setup" command
which I saw on redhat's 7.1 errata sheet to set
ipchains to "no firewall" - but nothing.

>From external host - I can ping my machine, and
traceroute reaches the box.

Other things - after installation, I had run the
redhat updater to update my system.

I'm at the point of finding redhat 6.2 and installing
this - since I need to get working on Apache
installation for a class that I'm in. I've attached
the messages log in the hope that someone might have a
clue about this.
