If it comes to money, there is price and value. If you want to stay cheap and not worry about price, there are very cheap packet filtering firewalls like Smoothwall that run incredibly cheap. I think software is around a hundred or two dollars. In terms of value, or bang for buck, you can go with one of the Checkpoint Soho edition firewalls, which are considerably more expensive in terms of licensing, around 2500 for the 50 user license with around 1000 a year for maintenance. Which one are you going to do better with? Depends on your needs. Packet filtering has its place, but if you are hosting your own email/web/anything, your going to have a very very open port with a packet filter. With a firewall that handles a bit more like the checkpoint, this is mostly what I know but there are others, you can have protection even on those ports that are open. Its not what you are willing to spend that is the issue, its what you need to do.
