Home study is not for the faint of heart. It is a complete waste of time unless you totally commit yourself to the task of learning the information. In a classroom setting a person can learn some of the stuff just by sitting and halfway listening. Unless you are a rock or a piece of wood, you will pick up some of the information. That plus some study can get some people past the tests.
Studying alone means that you must work. Reading, testing then practicing is the formula. Only, you must do that each day...on your own. I prefer studying on my own because I can go at my own pace and focus on things I don't quite understand. A class isn't as lenient in this respect. I must admit that the thing that got me over the hump in my Cisco certs is having someone I could go to for clarification on certain topics. Periodically I could sit with a "mentor" and ask a few questions. This, a few books and a healthy dose of perseverance was all I needed. The only cash that I spent was for books and the actual test. THAT'S WHAT I CALL A BARGAIN! -----Original Message----- From: mmcgillis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, February 08, 2002 9:31 AM To: Frederik Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Certificates (MCSE,CCNA,...) The books only save you money if: -They cover all the need to know content -You have good reading comprehension -You have free time to study them I know a lot of people who go read the books and then fail the test 3-4 times. In this case, they may have been better off with the class. Classes are great because (you hope) the instructor has both realtime experience and experience with the test. If you use the instructor properly you get much more than a passed test out of the deal. I think cheaper methods for the most part depend on the individual. just my thoughts!
