http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_on_PostgreSQL doesn't have much of use, and its Talk: page is somewhat disheartening. You use ($wgDBtype == 'postgres') to check , http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/$wgDBtype <http://svn.wikimedia.org/svnroot/mediawiki/tags/REL1_13_3/phase3/includes/db/DatabasePostgres.php> but there are some global variables and such set up elsewhere.
