Tell us what version of james, what db, and what jdbc drivers you're
using..
It looks (to me) more like a problem with your driver or db than with
James, but it _might_ be a problem with the connection pool, either our
hand-rolled one or dbcp depending which version of James..
PS I've found in general that few connections (about what you _really_ use)
are often better than many, as they smooth out peaks of load, but I don't
know if this is applicable to James as this relies on wait/notify being
used by the pool to stall threads until connections are available, and if
polling or exceptions are usedby the pool instead it might have the
opposite effect!

Hi,
We performed stress testing on James using postal for around 4000
messages/min. After 1hr and 15 mins, we got
java.sql.SQLException: Communication link failure: java.net.Socket
Exception.
After receiving such exceptions, james stopped processing mails.
For this test the various parameters used were:
1. Number of spool threads = 10
2. Number of outgoing threads = 20
3. Max number of database connections to maildb = 60
4. Max number of database connections to mailrepository = 60
5. Connection manager timeout = 5 seconds
We also noted that if we had 20 spool threads and 20 outgoing threads then
james could process (accept, process, send mail ) around 400 mails/min. We
tried few more configurations of the number of spool/incoming threads such
as 30/30, but found that these gave errors like “broken pipe” or “server
timed out at read”. 20/20 gave the highest throughput, although we didn’t
run the 20/20 set for more than 20 mins.
We would appreciate if some of you could share your views on this matter.
