Hi Stefano, My problem was the same as for the mailling thread "Shutting down because there are not any applications running"

I was also starting the mail server through './run.sh >> mail.log &'. My problem has also been solved after configuring james to start as a service through phoenix.sh as mentioned in http://wiki.apache.org/james/RunAsService Many thanks, Gaurav Handa
