Addendum: I see "JVM exit abnormally" every time I kill (CTRL-C under windows, KILL <procid> under linux) the jvm.

Can I try adding some debug statements in the code of Server B so that the
next time it crashes, I get more informational log messages? I think the
error is comming from the underlying avalon phoenix framework. Please let me know the classes in which i shall add some debug messages. I would also try
checking for some more differences between the two servers.

I never seen james closing without an exception so I don't know where to start (The only times I saw this I had either broken RAM or broken JVMs)

I would start upgrading the jvm.

You can change the log to debug in server.xml but AFAIK exceptions are always logged at error level, so this will not change.
