The technology is related, and is in control of your destiny. Know it well,
and
you'll be able to master it well. Know it only by name, and it will own you.
Today, we have systems that are "legacy" because the technology was not mature.
This, is, in fact the on going problem that I see the most. People buying
into a technology because all they want is a solution. They think the
technology is not important and that only the features they need now are the
issue.
Failing to consider your future needs now, as a part of your technology choice,
will place you in a position of compromise which the technology may or may not
be able to evolve into solving.
The telephone business started with proprietary technologies that were pushed
into standards bodies by Monopolistic entities (familar story? XML?). They
involved one type of data transport, audio streams. Later, data became
important and it was decided that more protocols were needed. Devices were
design to plug into this network in between the end users and the fabric to
modulate the data using fancy compression to improve available bandwidth (sound
familar? XML Compression?).
Now, that entire business is going through a revolution as the decide its not
so
important that the data formats be standard as it is that any type of data
needed can be transported.
Technology matters. But, some people still dream...
