Maybe we just can't see where the complication is. The only
one I've used is FreeMarker, so I can only address it, but:
o The examples on the site are sparse, but complete. There's
enough information there to get started.
o The template syntax is clearly explained.
o The steps needed to fill the template are clearly
explained.

I don't think it's messy at all. I've used the template system
that used to be part of the Apache JServ tools package and FreeMarker.
I've looked at WebMacro a bit, but haven't developed anything that uses
it. Compared to the mess of ASP or Perl w/embedded HTML, servlets are
a joy.
