Actually, someone does own this list.  That someone is Sun.  And they
have set policies for this list, which include restricting off-topic
posts and suggesting people check other resources (like FAQs and the
list archives) before posting to the list.

Please, don't bring up red herrings, this is not about "rights".  It's
about what's reasonable and what's important for keeping the list a
valuable resource.

Of course, the irony here is you're telling people not to post while
saying that people can't tell people not to post.

Depends what you mean by "put up with".  There will always be some
amount of off-topic/too basic questions, but there are alternatives
besides passively accepting it -- like actively trying to discourage
it (which some are doing) and leaving the list (as others are doing).
