Here's a simple way to make a putting aid. Get your oldest pair of sunglasses
(or even a pair of plastic lens clear or prescription glasses). Scratch two
straight horizontal lines on the front (left for righty's) about 1/4" apart.
Scratch a couple vertical lines across the horizontal lines also about 1/4"
apart. Set the putter behind the ball with the ball centered in the square of
the grid. Pull the putter back and push it through the horizontal lines. The
putter face is aligned square to the vertical lines and the stroke is square
through the horizontal lines. The distances between the lines may or not be
1/4" but some experimentation will get you where you need to be.

If you're moving your head, the ball will fall outside the lines. If the stroke
isn't square, the putter will move outside the lines. Using something like this
allows you to leave the lumber at home, and you don't have to set up strings
and tees. Just put the glasses on and go practice.
