The instructions Tom gave are very close!
Here is the correct way to make a scraper and safety shield:
Salvage a piece of butt end of a steel shaft approx 6+" long3. Cut near one end a 120º angle, now grind off the end to be square. Sharpen the squared end which is about 1/2" wide be sanding on the OUTSIDE of the squared edge at an angle of about 20º. Smooth the INSIDE of the sharpened edge with a round file (like that used to sharpen a chain saw). On the other end you can either mount a golf ball (as Tom instructed)or a piece of a salvaged grip (another reason to save grips with air).

Now the "safety pin". Take a 3/4" long piece of graphit shaft tip and slide it over a 2 - 3" long drywall screw. Cut a round disk of heavy plastic (top from 5 gallon bucket) and put the screw through a center hole of the disk. The plastic disk protects the tool from dulling. Screw this into the side of your workbench at an angle that corresponds to the angle of a shaft with its butt over the screw peg when the shaft is held in nondominant hand fro scraping. The safety pin holds the shaft from slipping when scraping the grip tape off.
To resharpen follow construction directions.

Grab an old steel shaft. Cut a section off the butt end. Grind the end of the section down at an angle. Grab a golf ball. Drill a hole in it. Epoxy the unground end of the steel shaft butt end into the ball. The ball is now the handle. The now sharpened steel shaft end is the scraper. Use with care on graphite.
