Poking around a bit more I found an interesting thread [1] in which
someone wrote a little C app to toggle the keyboard. I tried it and it
works. I was able to go to Wrench -> Input -> Key Bindings, select
Keycode-177, and then configure a "Command" pointing at the binary from
that thread. It only worked right when I passed the flag --toggle, -t
didn't work.

AUX toggling the keyboard is great, but it seems to be conflicting with
the hints by some apps to raise the keyboard, notably vala-terminal.
Does anyone know how to turn off this hinting feature to raise the
keyboard?

Be all this as it may, I totally forgot that I had Liturki installed,
which makes this issue of raising and lowering the keyboard using the
AUX key a moot point. But still I am very interested to learn about way
to reprogram the AUX key.

Then I found this thread, which is only marginally relevant, but
interesting nonetheless [2].
