The other thing I would say on this is to watch for the possibility of this becoming a "conscience vote" issue in the more socially conservative part of the Liberal party. As you say Geoff, there is an element there who are very close to this issue, and they won't want to oppose it simply to be contrarian. All it will take is for a couple of them to cross the floor over this issue...

With Fielding and Xenophon so important in the Senate, it isn't inconceivable for the Rudd Filter to be opposed by only the Greens, with the Coalition using their support for it to horse trade support from Fielding and Xenophon to help block other legislation down the track.
