There has to still be opportunity in a medium that is so heavily used. I've always thought there was good potential for an enterprise app that encapsulates the pop/imap/smtp relays...
1) Tracking e-mail to see who, how many, how often and when e-mail was read. 2) Automated accumulation and management of knowledge received and sent by e-mail. (2) is a good fit for our semantic categorisation and analysis tech - it's even on our list of possible "pivots" (Sheesh, you Lean Startup guys have even got me using the word ;-) ) An e-mail client paired with the server app. would allow for more functionality and greater accuracy - but it would be optional, so not a barrier to getting the app adopted. And once you have the beach-head... Just a thought.
