Additionally, Outlook’s reputation for stability and performance has probably
had a bad effect on Xobni.. I know I uninstalled it in frustration after a
little while because it made sucky Outlook crash even more.

My vote is do it all in the cloud, do it with Gmail and its extensive (and
growing) set of email related APIs, and if you find that there’s a need to
rewrite a mail client (and deal with all the engineering cost and user inertia
that involves), then do it after you’ve validated your approach to
notifications and de-cluttering on top of a platform that already has traction.

But the other thing with plugins is it seems difficult to cover both Outlook
and Gmail. Even Xobni who has a shitload of money are still Outlook only, even
though they've been talking about doing Gmail as well for ever.

Just to add to the list of companies in that space, boomerang for gmail plugin
(http://www.boomeranggmail.com/) lets you schedule emails to be sent later and
'snoozes' email to view later like you described.

I personally like the plugin approach because it let's you keep using the same
email client you're familiar with (in this case gmail).

Hi Chris, thanks for that, I hadn't seen it yet... it's an interesting
site, but still doesn't really solve the problem I think. There are
many products out there that solve part of the problem, we'd like to
combine the best of these solutions and add a few ideas of our own.

I've looked at a fair few solutions out there:
otherinbox.com<http://otherinbox.com> ($3.8M+ in funding)
xobni.com<http://xobni.com> ($30M+ in funding)
sanebox.com<http://sanebox.com>
liaise.com<http://liaise.com> (funding from Southern Cross?)
clearcontext.com<http://clearcontext.com> ($500k funding)
nutshellmail.com<http://nutshellmail.com>
GMail Priority Inbox
GMail labs features
unsubscribe.com<http://unsubscribe.com> ($2.1M+ in funding)
Spokeo.com

This is great because it validates that there is a problem and a need
for a solution.
