Kev, I had no trouble using an AU credit card to recharge online. Can't remember if I used the AMEX or VISA; perhaps using the AMEX was how I got around a limit you've discovered.

I also use a virgin mobile prepaid usb mobile - whilst wifi is plentiful, quality in cafes etc can be sporadic and if you have meetings in large corporates, often accessing their networks can be a pain.
