It's gul*kand*, not gulkhand. I suspect it's of Mughal origin, because
of 'gul' - which means flower or rose, I think, in Arabic.
And yes, Deepa, even I never liked it- notwithstanding childhood
memories of nice neighbours offering it to us. :-)
