"Extremely dangerous" is an exaggeration.
It's relatively dangerous.
There are more and less dangerous things in nature.
Alpha radiation isn't hard to stop, for one thing and exposure time spans, distance and concentration all play a role....compared to what other sources of radiation may be around... and there are many. Soil borne Radon Gas accumulation in a sealed house is many times more dangerous than *eating* a DU round. Living in a granite building is far more dangerous than a DU ammo dump next door.

If a DU round penetrates your tank, it's not too likely you'll live long enough for breathing the vapors to be a problem....living long enough to take that breath is the major concern.

DU dust is extremely heavy and doesn't tend to blow far in the wind. It does tend to shift downwards through sand like gold dust does, to be shielded by the sand. [which, in some cases, is more radioactive than the DU residue] Some Uranium compounds are soluble in water which is a concern for a while, but that property also tends to de-concentrate it to emission levels swamped out by natural background radiation. There is not a day goes by that people don't consume some fine Uranium dust....and not "depleted" Uranium either.
It the full Monty *with* the much more radioactive U235.

Context:

The total mass of depleted uranium dispersed over Kosovo was at most 25 tons. The radioactivity of one round was about 10 megabecquerels (MBq). Assuming that 30,000 rounds were fired, about 300,000 MBq of uranium-238 activity were dispersed in Kosovo's environment (10,887 square kilometers). Yet, the natural uranium-238 in a one-centimeter layer of Kosovo soil emits about 100,000,000 MBq. Thus, the surface layer of soil in Kosovo contains about 300 times more natural uranium than was dispersed there by NATO weaponry.

[If a DU round were buried in even just a little in Kosovo soil, a Geiger counter would not be able to find it ]

Depleted uranium emits only extremely low levels of gamma radiation and low levels of alpha and beta particles that are easily blocked by skin and clothing.

Passengers on a long airline flight are exposed to more radiation risk than soldiers hypothetically enclosed for one year in a tank surrounded by armor and shells with depleted uranium. [High altitudes remove one from a thick cosmic radiation shielding layer of air]

[We live in a literal sea of radiation, U238 a very minor portion of it.]

Hey CarlDeb!

That was quick .. thank you ..

and .. this stuff keeps on going extremely dangerous for eons - right?
It is toxic like lead and mercury. It is slightly radioactive with a half life of 4.568X10^9 years. So in a little over four and a half billion years, it will decay to half the amount there initially. It decays by alpha emission with an average energy of 4.194 MeV. It also emits gammas with an average energy of 1.30 Kev. It has a slew of daughters that decay fairly rapidly.
and it deminishes by half every so much time?
Yes, about every 4.6 billion years.

Marshall
and the 'leaders' keep doing as they find pleasant-and-'necessary'?

Good book to read on this asunto is

"Nuclear -/gosh forgot the second word //now // it is somethig like annihalation-eradication -? by Walter Russell;
although it was published as long ago as during the cold war,
it gives good insights in the basics of nuclear (and other) energy,

AND

in the innocent/ignorant toddler-human, playing with the sharp razor which nuclear energy really is -- i.e. of which he DOES NOT UNDERSTAND the annihaliting dangers.

Just observe closely the TRUTH, obscured by the (Russian) news-media and the things that really happened -and still are happening- with the health of the people in the areas around Chernobyl (and even as far as Moscou and farther out in Russia and even in leaning-to Finland); the rate of thyroid cancer in innocent children, the misformings of animals and plants in the region - and then do notice what the government did or rather did not do about this whole affair.

*Furthermore it is a good thing to know that EVERY ATOM BOMB has its effects on all of us earth-dwellers.* It may last some, but in time we are all breathing radiation polluted air, and walking in radiation saturated rain.

We'd better wake up fast and start learning what to do about this silent killer; your -and our- governments are NOT going to do it for us.

(Walter Rusell was a universal genius, a specialst on Lipizaner horses, a leading artist (busts of Roosevelt before, and after Pearl Harbor, and one of Mark Twain - see 'The man who sapped the secrets of the Universe) who set up amongst other things an alternative University - seeing that things also in higher education went awry, as long as half a decade ago. Walter Russel is amply described in your browser.)

Greetings, my CS Friends, from wet and rainy Colombia.

As health-care workers more and more involved in the
prevention of and the fight against cancer,
Luz and I are very much interested the nuclear/cancer thread.

Well, we have been on the topic of abbreviations before as I
remember, and now I have this abbreviation
wich I do not know: DU

Can you please explain to us what DU means?

        Thanks in advance,
