Possibly, you pushed contaminants from the scrubby into the micro pits in the electrodes.

Shining up the electrodes just wastes silver, doesn't accomplish anything and is a possible source of contamination.

.....just wipe off the loose stuff with something clean.....if even that.
There is nothing there that won't just come back DURING the next use.
