Hi Sandy,
This is from wiki:
"Lugol's solution consists of 5 g iodine
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iodine> (I_2 ) and 10 g potassium iodide
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_iodide> (KI) mixed with 85 ml
distilled water <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_%28molecule%29>, to
make a brown solution with a total iodine content of 150 mg/mL.
Potassium iodide renders the elementary iodine soluble
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soluble> in water through the formation of
the triiodide <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triiodide> (I_3 ^- ) ion. It
is not to be confused with tincture of iodine
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tincture_of_iodine> solutions, which
consist of elemental iodine, and iodide salts dissolved in water and
alcohol. Lugol's solution contains no alcohol."
Iodoral is 5mg iodine and 7.5mg potassium iodide.
I have never had Lugol's with alcohol in it.
FWIW,
Craig

Here is a recipe for making 7% iodine from a poster on another forum.
1. I mixed 8.2 grams of potassium iodide with 80 ml of distilled water
2. I mixed 12.7 grams of iodine crystals with 80.8 ml of 95% ethanol
(grain alcohol)
3. I mixed both solutions together using a wooden spoon in a glass
container (with a glass lid and rubber seal)
Sandy.
