Hello Brooks, were you aware of the effect GMO corn or its pollen is having on
Mexican corn varieties? I'll try to scratch up a reference before I leave
(vacation) but as I remember the news report, most everyone grows corn, even if
only a few plants. Many, peasant, middle class or ??? have their own 'pet'
varieties, passed down through the family. Apparently despite the Mexican
government's refusal to allow imports for any reason (at least pre- Vicente Fox)
it is showing up in the feed stocks, and food shelves, and streets and sidewalks
where locals pointed it out to the reporter covering the story, and
contaminating
the local adapted heirloom forms.
One problem I see with the GMO's is their crossing genes from animal to
vegetable
kingdoms, or vice versa, with all the perversions in between. The stability of
the species within the kingdoms, despite the evidence of chance and deliberate
crossing throughout the millenia - not to mention the rise of new species - is
evidence that within each kingdom such crossings will probably be self limiting
or
beneficial, though the Mexican corn story might give some pause. However when
it
comes to crossing genetic material from animal to vegetable, for instance, or
more - well, pandemically - bacterium to either, we run the risk of discovering
things we would rather not.
Chiefly I detest having such recklessness of others foisted upon me so they can
make more money - as if they didn't have enough!
Grumble, mumble, mutter!
