To explain the raised pH, there must be some other stuff in those prill beads that perhaps lasts less than a lifetime - magnesium chloride dissolved in water will make it mildly acid (lowering the pH). Might pay to weigh those beads on a regular basis. Don't be surprised if they magically lose weight after each water treatment. If not, expect a steady decline in pH raising capacity, as the soluble alkaline component(s) leach out over time, leaving behind something with perhaps less magical qualities than before.
