David,
What you are doing is checking the Glycemic Index (GL) of various foods,
which is good. There is an easier way. There is a list of foods and their
GL at the web site below. There is a lot about diabetes info, including
info about GL, at this site. Good luck.
PS: Sounds like you have your blood sugar under control. Great!
I am changing the subject because this thread is no longer about congestive
heart failure.

I am type 2 diabetic. The way I test for carbs is I check my blood sugar
before I eat the food in question, then wait half an hour, then check the
blood sugar again. If the food kicks my blood sugar above 150 then I
declare it to be a carb and don't eat it again. I have tested many
different foods this way over the past 2 years. A small baked potato kicks
me up to around 300. 1 cup of Navy beans kick it up to around 230. All
beans are not created equal, also everyone has varying amounts of
production loss of insulin so you really have to check foods yourself with
a blood glucose meter.
Using this method I have cut my blood sugar down to about 85 average.

Might as well consider potatoes as sugar lumps.
All the reports from beans aren't in yet.
