You or your doctor have to ask the blood lab to measure your ferritin levels. It's an available test, but not usually part of the routine blood test package. Ferritin is a large, cage-like molecule that is used by the body to transport otherwise unbound iron. There is supposedly a pretty steady ratio between stored iron and circulating ferritin levels.
