I would think they should just rename d14 to an official 1.8, stick it on 
the web site, and be done with it.

The only reason I think they should do it is because of the spam holes in 
1.7. Right now they are essentially encouraging use of known exploitable 
software. I doubt the numbers are high, but based on the fact that every 
few weeks it crops up here with someone using 1.7 because they are 
unaware of a 1.8, I'd say there is enough people to warrent a change.

Doing an official 1.8 release would help get 1.7 out of use. At the very 
least, they should link to the 1.8b8d14 version from the web site, with a 
mention that it should be used instead of 1.7.
