At 6:29 PM -0500 6/22/04, [EMAIL PROTECTED] imposed structure on a stream of electrons, yielding:
Hey Bill,

Curious... what's this line about?

190.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. CNAME 190.184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa.

Seems rather redundant.

Nope. It's part of a 'classless' delegation. Each of the 6 usable addresses in 66.73.230.184/29 has a CNAME record in the parent zone:

185.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. 7200 IN CNAME 185.184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa.
186.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. 7200 IN CNAME 186.184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa.
187.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. 7200 IN CNAME 187.184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa.
188.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. 7200 IN CNAME 188.184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa.
189.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. 7200 IN CNAME 189.184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa.
190.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. 7200 IN CNAME 190.184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa.

The 230.73.66.in-addr.arpa zone is handled by SBC (formerly Ameritech) because they control the enclosing /14 network. They delegate a sub-zone to me:

184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN NS fireproof.scconsult.com.
184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN NS ns.scconsult.com.
184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN NS ns13.zoneedit.com.
184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN NS ns14.zoneedit.com.
184.230.73.66.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN NS toaster.scconsult.com.

(yes, there's overkill there. The first and last really should not be out in the wild, but I keep not getting around to setting up the split-horizon DNS...)

Note that all those CNAME records point into that zone which is delegated to me.
