It's worth bearing in mind, of course, that a single aggregate figure obscures a lot of important structural information.
Aerospace technology was going gangbusters in the 60s, we were supposed
to have colonized Mars by now and would have too at that rate. Nobody
imagined it was about to hit a brick wall.
But against that unpleasant surprise, there were the pleasant surprises
of the microcomputer boom of the 80s and the Internet boom of the 90s.
I'm sure there'll be more of both types ahead.
The road is neither shorter nor longer than it is, and the way to the end is one step at a time.
