Right - I did not read the sticky (hiding face in shame).

It seems the solution would be to have a unified signup which makes you 
a part of both the forum and the mailing list. During the signup process 
one could opt-out of receiving email if they wished. They would still be 
singed up for the list, but no email is delivered to them.

Just one possible solution.
