Ok, here's an update then.
The reverb situation that I mentioned happens
when I am in the line in window, and continues
when I Command tab away from it. I use
headphones all the time on this MBA, and need
the volume up full. As I have said, the higher
the volume, the greater the reverb. However, if
I make a Skype call, once I get a connection,
the reverb drops out and all is ok. Or ok
enough, what happens is that when I speak, there
is a slight delay before sound reaches my headphones.
I don't like having my ears blocked by
headphones without hearing myself back in them,
this is a typical radio broadcast scenario that
I have been use to in the past -

The problem is that doing this creates reverb
that only gets adjusted by lowering the volume.
Have I missed something? I'd like to have
separate control over the amount of reberb and
the volume level; not so good if turning down one also turns down the other -
