Hello, May I ask you if you have tried the last few versions of Skype (eg. 6.11)? You probably haven't, because if you have, you would know that although all those things you say were true, some of them were changed and the overall experience of working with Skype has greatly improved from Skype 6.9 and newer.
1. Now we can use not only TAB and Shift+TAB to navigate in the Skype interface, but F6 and Shift+F6 as well, witch makes bigger "jumps" in the TAB order. Try it and you'll see what I'm talking about. 2. The "Current conversations" (also known previously as "Live conversations") is now always focusable for me. I need to only press up arrow from the "Contacts" or "Recent conversations" list and I'm there. 3. Several local (available only from within Skype's interface) keyboard commands have also been added. Some of them are: - Control+M to mute and unmute the microphone; - Alt+PageUp to answer a call; - Alt+PageDown to hangup a call; - Control+R to make a voice call within the current conversation; - Control+Shift+R to make a video call within the current conversation; - Control+D to open the dialer (the one for making phone calls); - Control+Shift+F to send a file; - Control+Shift+A to add participants to the current conversation; - Control+I to open our profile for editing; - Control+H to open the Skype Home; - etc. All of the commands are in the Skype menus and you can check them from there. Note however, that if a Skype global hotkey is set for the same action (eg. for answering a call), the internal (local) keyboard command will not work and will not be available in the menu entry for the command. 4. The procedure for sending an IM is also simpler than you describe it to be, if you have unchecked the Skype option to make a call upon double click on the contact's name in the contacts list - just press Enter. If then you want to call him, from the opened conversation window press Control+R. But I do admit that pressing spacebar should open the conversation window - now it doesn't. But the last may be in order to provide better experience while selecting multiple contacts from the list - I don't know. 5. Now we have another sound notification, witch can alert us if some of the participants in the currently focused conversation has send us a message. That is turned off by default, until you turn on the accessibility mode in Skype's preferences. Then however, it can't be turned off unless you turn off the accessibility mode, witch I personally do not recommend - Skype is less usable for us that way. 6. And I do admit, that reading of Skype system tray alerts from NVDA would be a good thing. Chat reading commands as well, And typing notifications too. But I can do without them, if needs be. Ok with out a script command you are going to be doing a lot of work to just get the information you want. Typing a message to some one ok press alt+1 get in to the contact list find the person to chat with now press the contact key arrow down to send im and press enter. Keyboard command press control 1 to get in to the contact list arrow to the person you want to chat with press space press control 4. Getting in to the live call list with out scrips good luck. Some times it is at the top of your contact list some times it just doesn't focus. The list goes on and on but I think you have the idea. It's true that the JAWS scripts for Skype have a couple of extra features we don't get when using Skype with NVDA, namely a sound when people are typing and an immediate report of the change of online statuses of contacts, but those are just extras, and Skype is perfectly usable without them, I think so anyway.
