I'm using Samba 2.04b (not on Linux but parameters should be the same)
In smb.conf on the Linux box make sure that you have set the following in
the global section:
workgroup = WHATEVER_ITS_CALLED
where WHATEVER_ITS_CALLED is found from the 'doze Network Neighborhood and
is the NT "domain" your NT box thinks it's a member of.
encrypt passwords = yes
This is the normal default for (modern) 'doze NT; I wouldn't recommend
fidgetting with the NT box because it'll only get blown away next time its
OS gets re-installed ;-)
local master = no
This stops the NT and other 'doze machines from thinking that the Samba
Server can supply all WINS stuff (which it probably can't); you really don't
want it to win elections. Leave that to an NT server.
os level = 0
announce as = Win95
This should ensure that it loses elections. I have found it's a bad idea to
up the os level (unless you are experimenting)
wins server = some.IP.address.??.??
This is your local WINS server (whoever that is) (not the Samba box)
After altering smb.conf globals you should stop and re-start the Samba
service so that it broadcasts its OS level (and maybe force an election to
occur).
Remember that it can take up to 50 minutes for all SMB clients to sort
themselves out!
Go get another cuppa.
