Agreed. I won't install a mission critical, or even mission kinda-critical
system without a UPS.

I've used APC's for years - they're reliable, the battery life is good,
and they filter line power exceptionally well {I had one site where you
could set your watch by the UPS's "Beep Beep Beep" as it cut the line
power and went to battery when the off-peak high frequency tone unbalanced
the power for a minute or two every day}.
They have software which interfaces with Novell, WindoZe and Unix, and
allows shutdown of each machine if the battery is about to go flat. Not
sure about running multiple machines off the one shutdown sable - I only
ever had one machine per UPS.
