i just happen to have this prob recently
i used a redhat 5.2 cd to get it back. after booting to the cd type at
the prompt
linux single root=/dev/hda2 imagerd=
(yes a return right after '=')
means boot to your linux partition and dont use default image on cd
this got me back to my old system and i just had to type 'lilo'
