The solution is simple, use the -r option of lilo which is intended for
this, e.g.
lilo -r /mount/hda5
This makes lilo use /mnt/hda5 as the root directory so it will read
lilo.conf from /mnt/hda5/etc/lilo.conf. All other file references
will be relative to this root directory too.
