He guys, ive been looking at setting up a wireless WAN through Sydney,
Newcastle and wollongong, using the 2.4ghz spectrum, ive got a stack of
material on the subject, heres some URL's, also theres a mailing list,
[EMAIL PROTECTED] that deals with things related to this, heres some bits
and pieces :

if your looking for some cards, most are PCMCIA, I bought a kit....$300 gets
you 2x ISA PCMCIA adaptors (non plug and play) 2x PCMCIA "webgear aviator"
2mb/sec wireless NICs and drivers, linux support as well from the website
and instruction manuals...their available from www.mimp.com.au this is
wherei bought them, they had them here to me in 3 working days which was
pretty nice
Also if you want the Lucent Wavelan 11Mbps cards, and don't mind waiting
http://www.pcconnection.com/scripts/productdetail.asp?product_id=138043 has
them for $159.95 US I don't know how much this will equate to with freight
etc, also www.x.net.au has a link on their products page quoting a price of
$450 AU for one of these cards which may work out cheaper...Im not too sure
where their getting them from, apparently they have most of the mornington
peninsula covered in Victoria with a 11Mbps WAN.
If any of you Sydney Sluggers are interested and have the funds to setup a
wireless LAN/WAN covering Sydney give me a yell and we'll see what we can
figure out.

Hmmm... Packet Radio ???...:-)
A small Yagi, suitably alligned at each end, connected to the WaveLan
card(s) will probably work at low speeds - what output power do they have
(might need to boost it slightly)....
Yeah, I always did think big (now, if I can just get Linux working on my
Nokia 9110...:-))
