You can actually do it as I've done it before but using only serial cable
and not anything too high in baud rate.
I used 2 x ~1GHz TX and RX diodes and had the problem of them being on the
same frequency.
I just turned one set 90 degress out of phase and it was perfect and created
almost no noise interference with the other set.. modulation was a tricky
bit though as we used a 7805 regulator to AM modulate the diode which blew
up in the end when a solder joint went open and 5 volts when sky high and
killed our project. We did get some communication out of it though but like
I said we didn't use a high baud rate as we wanted to establish that it was
working before pushing to technology... then the bang... so we left it at
that as we couldn't get another transmitter at a cheap cost..
Distance (tested anyway) was only the next room too so I wouldn't know what
the 2 KM distance would be like..
