Yep this is so, the Electricity Commission of NSW uses the same
techniques. An array (30 elements or so) will give you about 20db
gain (3db = x2 effect) by narrowing the beam to a couple of degrees
for good point-to-point transmissions (you'll need to make the
antenna especially for the carrier freq and for the bandwidth you
require). If you use the standard constructions techniques then it
will look sortof like a UHF TV arial so local councils and other
nosey people probably will not even notice it (assuming you don't have
to put it up a 30m tower). Make sure you use N-Connectors and really
ultra low loss cable (expect 3db loss i.e. 50% lose for every 10m
runs with standard retail available cable, see cable specialists
to get the commercial stuff). If you want you can built two and link
them as phase arrays (paralleling).
Any ham op with Satellite experience can assist you with this.
