My suggestion is dependant on the system configuration.
1. If you have only 1 PPP connection then just `ifconfig | grep ppp0` or
similar...
2. if you have multiple PPP connections like my setup then you can do a `ps
-ef | grep ppp-watch ifcfg-ppp3` if ppp3 is the connection to the internet
that you use...

I'm about to set up a system to monitor an internet connection, and I
want it to send an SMS message to me if it's access to the internet goes
down.
The paging will be handled through vodafones modem to SMS service; it
should be easy to write a script that will do the actual paging.
My question is what should I use for the actual monitoring? A simple
script that pings at regular intervals and pages if it fails too many
times would work, but I'm sure there are programs out there that are a
bit more comprehensive/reliable.
